Prevention is better than cure
On-going care to keep your teeth at their best.
Preventing
your teeth from getting into problems in the first place, and
keeping them healthy after you've sorted out any problems, takes
active good behaviour on your part. However, we can do a lot
to get you on the right path.
Our hygienists are superb knowledgeable, friendly, caring
and their manner makes you want to do your part, to keep
up with the cleaning and maintenance programmes. They are extremely
gentle and at the end of your appointment your teeth will be
sparkling, clean and healthy. They are also brilliant motivators
perhaps not surprisingly, one of them has a degree in Psychology.
We are strongly committed to helping you keep your teeth for
life and to preventing serious gum problems. We work closely
in partnership with you so that you can look after your teeth
for the long-term.
Hygiene Programmes
There are times when patients do have problems with their
gums that may require one of our periodontitis or gingivitis
programmes. These are designed so that the hygienist has the
time to clean your teeth very well and to discuss brushing and
flossing techniques. She may recommend various brushes or mouth
washes. By working with you, the hygienist and dentist can really
make a difference to those who are susceptible to gum problems.
Cleaning your teeth and gums
Cleaning your teeth effectively is the best way to avoid bad
breath or halitosis. There are several programmes that we have
developed to help you keep your mouth fresh. A special microscope
shows you the bugs that cause bad breath and our hygienists can
help you eradicate the problem. The result is added confidence,
whether at work or in your social life.
Diet
What we eat and most importantly when we eat it affects what
is going on in our mouths. The hygienist will take the time to
discuss this with you and may ask you to fill in a diet sheet
so that she can advise you what would help you. We have a variety
of tests to identify if you are susceptible to decay and that
helps us pinpoint the right way to reduce the risk.
Start Right
Decay and gum disease start when you're young and can plague
you for the rest of life. However, if you show children how to
keep their mouths fresh and healthy, they can expect to have
their teeth for life. With the right information and help children
can avoid having any fillings.
Once children reach a certain point in their development your
dentist will recommend regular hygiene appointments. This is
a valuable investment in your children's health.
The hygienist will show your children how to brush and floss
their teeth, and will explain what effect diet has on their teeth.
Their progress is monitored from appointment to appointment.
Fluoride and Fissure Sealants
Children can now avoid having fillings. These treatments can
both strengthen and protect your children's teeth so that it
is harder for decay to attack the teeth. The dentist will discuss
these with you as needed.
Fissure Sealants work by bonding a plastic coating to biting
surfaces at the back of the mouth so that it is harder for decay
to attack these teeth. The back teeth (molars) are those which
are used for chewing and the fissure sealing can really help
to keep them for life.
Whilst your dentist will discuss it with you, there is no
doubt that fluoride treatmenthelps to strengthen teeth so that
they are more resistant to tooth decay. This is a routine treatment
which takes place every six months when your child sees the hygienist.
Orthodontist
The hygienist sees all children who are having orthodontic
treatment. It is important whilst treatment is going on that
the teeth are kept clean and gums are healthy. The hygienist
can help make sure there is no decay whilst the braces are on.
